Pregnant Belly Cakes
Do you get tired of men, women, and children running up to rub your belly? Do you ever feel like telling them, “Do I look like a Buddha figurine?!” Yes, I know it can be frustrating trying not to be rude, but wishing people would just keep their hands to themselves. Yet, that cute belly is simply irresistible!Because it’s just that cute, we are going to talk about how to make a pregnant belly cake for your baby shower extravaganza.
Here's a Creative Belly Cake Idea
To make one of these adorable cakes, you’re going to need three cake pans. The largest needs to be a rectangular cake pan that is larger than the other two put together. The second one needs to be a round cake pan about twice the size of the smaller one. The third one should be round as well. If you can, try to have two of the third cake pans because you will need to cakes that size. Bake all four cakes and set them to cool while you gather all your cake building materials and ingredients. These cakes can be made with frosting, but you will most likely want to use fondant because it creates the most luxurious fabric simulation that you’ll need.
Cover your rectangular cake first with whatever color fondant you choose for the background. Carefully place your “belly” cake on top of your rectangular cake where you plan to place it. If you think you’ll have trouble with the cake falling or collapsing as you turn it over, use a large, clean cutting board well greased with butter or another tasty lubricant to hold the cake in place temporarily. Then after you turn over your belly cake, carefully slip out the cutting board, letting the cake slide onto your rectangular cake. Do the same for your breast cakes. Now roll a small ball of gum paste or fondant and place it carefully on the center of your belly cake before you cover it with more fondant.
As you lay your fondant “dress” over your belly and breast cakes, be sure not to smooth it out too much. You fondant should have some bends and curls as if it were the fabric of a dress.
Lastly, add some lacy trim to the edges of your dress, a brooch, a corsage, or maybe a ribbon sash around the waste made from a different color fondant. Add your special message to the cake and any other special accessories you can think of made from gum paste or fondant.
