LadyBug Cakes for your Baby Shower

Ladybug Cakes Idea

Be ready with the red, black, and white fondant, frosting, icing, or gum paste. You’re about to create your very own adorable ladybug baby shower cake for your celebration. Well granted your ladybug may be of a different color than the above mentioned customary ones, but for now, humor me. We’re going to give you a few ideas on how to make a simple, yet charming ladybug baby shower cake.

Start with two round cakes. One should be about twice as large as the other because it will be the body. The second one will be the head.

You’ll need to trim off a small section from the front of the body and from the back of the head so that the two pieces will fit together neatly when you push them together. Use some icing as “glue” to keep them together, and three or four toothpicks to keep them from slipping. Then carefully pushed them together and you’re ready to lay your fondant or frosting on. If you have trouble keeping your frosting from mixing then you may even want to lay the black frosting on the head and the red on the body before you put the two cakes together.

Once you have the frosting or fondant on your cakes, it’s time to put on the characteristic black polka dots on the back of you cute ladybug. Make at least a half dozen quarter size black polka dots from fondant or use a frosting cone to make quarter size black circles on the red back of the ladybug. Use two half dollar size white fondant circles for the ladybug’s eyes with two quarter size black fondant circles inside the white part for the ladybug’s pupils. Now pinch off a teardrop size of white fondant and roll it gently between your two fingers until it turns into a tic-tac shape. now flatten it and gentle put it near the top left or top right of the black pupil. Do another one for the other eyes in the exact same corner. This will give your ladybug’s eyes that reflective look that the cutest cartoons have.

For the ladybug’s antenna, use black gum paste. It will hold it’s shape much better than fondant. Roll out two antenna about 3 to 4 inches long and curl them then use toothpicks to stick them into your ladybug’s head. Finally, take one more black strip of fondant to make a straight line from the back of the ladybug’s head all the way to the ladybug’s tail to cut the wings in half.

If you’re using frosting on your cake, you’ll want to substitute icing or frosting instead of fondant for the decorating.
