Baby Shower Etiquette and Advice along with your Questions
Baby Shower Etiquette Baby showers have changed drastically over the years. Because, on this site, we concern ourselves with “modern” baby showers, we will quickly mention conventional methods of baby shower practices, but will mainly focus on newer, trendier forms of baby shower etiquette. By tradition, the baby shower was usually held in the home of mommy-to-be, a friend, or a relative. The ever increasing tendency, however, is the idea of having the baby shower at a quality restaurant, a church, a park, a reception hall, a beach, or a wide variety of generally accepted places where guests can gather together, sit, eat, drink, and be merry. Depending on your budget, you’ll want to consider some of these more modern locations for several reasons. First, if you have your party catered by a restaurant or reception hall, you can avoid having to clean up in some cases and it also frees your host up to be able to focus on the more fun aspects of the party like games and activities. Traditionally, baby showers have been held before the arrival of the baby, usually a few weeks or a couple of months before the baby’s due date. Today, baby showers can also be held post-partum (after the baby is born). For many reasons, this is quickly becoming the baby shower of choice as more and more mommies-to-be are expecting gifts that are gender specific and tailored to their baby’s size and needs. If you plan to have your baby shower after the baby is born, you may even choose to call it a “Welcome Baby Shower” or simply a “Welcome Party” for the new addition. In the past, custom dictated that the party would be hosted by a close female friend and the guest list would consist of strictly adult women who would show up and share mommy’s delight without children or men to interfere. Time has surely changed those traditions and it is commonplace for relatives and even the mommy-to-be herself to host the party. Additionally, the guest lists now include husbands, male friends, and yes, children at times at the discretion of the host(ess).
